Purpose of Plethysmometer?
Inflammation is a natural response of our immune system to injury, infection, or damage. Chronic inflammation can lead to tissue damage and scarring. Anti-inflammatory agents can help prevent this damage. Hence, screening of anti-inflammatory agents is essential. For this purpose, a Plethysmometer is used. It is mainly applicable to measure paw oedema, inflammation, or swelling in rodents by calculating changes in paw volume and paw oedema.
Working:
A Plethysmometer precisely quantifies even slight variations in swelling (inflammation) and volume, enabling researchers to assess the efficacy of anti-inflammatory agents in rodents. By measuring the subtle changes in paw volume, scientists can determine the degree to which these drugs mitigate inflammatory responses. The measurement process involves submerging the animal's paw in a water-filled tube containing a specialized sensor, which detects the minute displacement of water caused by the paw's immersion. The resulting volume change is then calculated in milliliters (mL) and displayed on the screen, providing a precise quantification of the inflammatory response. This measurement allows researchers to accurately evaluate the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory treatments.
